The Science of Reading
with Brisk Teaching and Brisk Boost
Teaching children to read is a vital mission for elementary schools. While it’s a complex process, educators now have a reliable body of research, The Science of Reading, to guide best practices. The Science of Reading is not a packaged program; it’s an evidence-based approach with the goal of teaching all students to read.
The Science of Reading focuses on five big ideas:
Phonemic awareness
Phonics
Fluency
Vocabulary
Comprehension
Brisk and Boost make it easier than ever to teach students how to read based on these pillars of the Science of Reading. Here are just a few examples.
Decodable Texts
Decodable texts offer beginning readers a systematic way to apply phonics knowledge and decode words. Because the texts use phonics patterns and sounds that have been previously taught, students can apply what they know to tackle unfamiliar words and increase both accuracy and fluency. Students delight to read passages that cater to their varied interests and Brisk can easily incorporate this information into creating decodable texts.

Sample Brisk Prompt:
Click on Brisk > Create > Decodable Text
Type the text below into Brisk’s prompt box:
Write two decodable texts, for first graders to practice short vowels. Many of my students like baseball while others like cats.
Lesson Plans
Teachers can use Brisk to create a lesson plan to teach phonemic awareness using a specific sound placed at the beginning, middle, or end of a word. Brisk can include an assessment and multisensory activities that increase student engagement.

Sample Brisk Prompt:
Create > Lesson Plan
Type the text below into Brisk’s prompt box:
Write a lesson plan to teach phonemic awareness using the letter B at the beginning of words. Provide an assessment and several multisensory games that students enjoy.
Change Level
Each classroom has students reading at a wide range of grade levels. Changing the reading level of an article, website, or text to meet students’ needs. If, for example, third graders are studying volcanoes, a teacher may have a grade level text that is not accessible by some students. By changing the level of the text, all students can study the same academic topic and improve their fluency and comprehension in the process.

Sample Brisk Prompt:
Select a source text/website/PDF > Change Level > select grade level > Change Reading Level
Boost Student Chat
Comprehension is another key pillar of the Science of Reading. Teachers can Boost a reading passage to students as a tutor experience. Teachers can assign Brisk Boost a role that will improve student comprehension. The AI will ask students recall, inference, and application questions, while monitoring their progress toward learning goals. Text-to-speech and speech-to-text make Boost accessible to students without keyboarding skills.

This is just a small sampling of what is possible with Brisk and Boost to bring the big ideas of the Science of Reading to life. While they cannot replace the expertise of a skilled teacher, harnessed by that teacher, they can significantly enhance our ability to implement the Science of Reading effectively.
